Ultimate Comics Avengers: Blade vs. the Avengers ReviewIn the third volume of Mark Millar's post-Ultimatum Ultimate Avengers series, vampires invade the Ultimate Marvel Universe, setting their sights on the superhero community in general and the Avengers (the black ops version of the Ultimates) in particular. Can even the legendary vampire slayer Blade stand in the way of this new breed of vampires, especially once they have Avengers in their ranks?
Story - Mark Millar continues to explore the darker side of the Ultimate Marvel Universe. This story is dark, violent and almost depressing. Honestly, it's a bit unnecessary as well. The Ultimate Avengers idea was worth exploring, but by now it's starting to feel overdone. Millar should be giving us Ultimates stories, not playing around with Iron Man-suited vampires and creating Daredevil knockoffs. His dialogue is great as usual, and the ending was definitely handled with typical Millar style, but this just didn't seem like a story that really needed to be told. It didn't help that he more or less did this story with the Marvel Zombies he introduced in his Ultimate Fantastic Four run.
Art - I'm a fan of Steve Dillon's understated artwork, but he's just not right for this kind of story, or any superhero story for that matter. His style, which was perfect for Preacher (and would absolutely rule on the Walking Dead) tends to make costumed heroes look even more ridiculous.
Enough already. These Ultimate Avengers stories are entertaining, but trotting out new versions of Ghost Rider and Blade just aren't enough to make up for the lack of a proper Ultimates series.Ultimate Comics Avengers: Blade vs. the Avengers OverviewA black-ops task force, the Avengers do the jobs too dirty for the public-facing Ultimates.
