The Monster War: A Tale of the King's Blades ReviewThe Monster War, originally three young adult novels forming The King's Daggers trilogy, is the tale of Sir Stalwart, youngest of the Old Blades, and Sister Emerald, a White Sister.
I was fortunate enough to find all three books in paperback several years ago, but never the less, this omnibus of the trilogy, renamed The Monster War, was the first book I put on my Kindle. I've lost track of how many times I've read and re-read Sir Stalwart, The Crooked House, and Silvercloak, and my only complaint is that there isn't more written about Stalwart.
There's humor, action, adventure, and drama packed into the story. And as always, Dave Duncan does a fantastic job of tying it together with the rest of his King's Blades universe, with the likes of Sir Snake and Sir Durendal making appearances. Wonderful in their own merit, but they add depth to the rest of the universe by focusing on several months during the Monster War, mentioned only briefly in passing in The Gilded Chain.
If you like light-hearted sword-and-sorcery type novels, these three will be right up your alley.The Monster War: A Tale of the King's Blades OverviewOriginally issued as a YA trilogy, "The King's Daggers" (including volumes Sir Stalwart, The Crooked House and Silvercloak), The Monster War works equally well as a single novel. The story fills a gap in the first Blades novel, The Gilded Chain, when King Ambrose sought to shut down the evil sorcery of the "Elementaries" and the sorcerers fought back by trying to kill him. The same great characters are all here: Ambrose himself, Grand Master, and Blades Durendal, Bandit, and Snake. Appearing for the first time are Sir Stalwart, the only Blade who does not bear a binding scar, and Emerald of the White Sisters, the only girl ever enrolled in Ironhall.The action wanders across Chivial from the White Sisters' headquarters at Oakendown, to Grandon, and into the heart of Ironhall, for the evil penetrates even there.
