Amory Wars Volume 2: The Second Stage Turbine Blade ReviewMost anyone looking this up knows that the Amory Wars is the graphic representation of the Coheed and Cambria albums, but for those that stumble onto this then that is exactly what they are. Anyone who has followed the band's music knows that the songs can be very cryptic, and as the frontman Claudio Sanchez has said, it is partially done on purpose so a wider audience can relate to the lyrics. That said, the albums are based around a science-fiction story conceived by Sanchez and now are being presented in a graphic medium and given a literal look at each songs' meaning.I did enjoy the first book in the re-vamp (there were previous attempts at telling the story through comics books), though I felt the art and storytelling was a lot more solid in this one. The artist, Gabriel Guzman, has a consistent and appealing style and the various cover arts from Tony Moore are very well done. The colors are more vibrant and have more depth to them and all in all, you may not be looking at oil paintings but you know are you are reading a professionally done comic.
I also think Claudio's writing in this half has improved. He tells a dark story from the beginning and though it might be because I've been following and attempting to decipher the story for a while, I understood the events in this second book easier than the first. Rest assured, I do believe this is a story for the fans of the band but it is easier to follow, and it's a really cool feeling recognizing the quotes and other nods to the songs and realizing what they meant.
I would recommend this and the first graphic novel to any fans of the band (who are just awesome, by the way, and this is coming from someone who does not like much modern rock. I love the fact that there's a prog-rock band doing concept albums and they have the musical talent to back it up), if just to fully understand the song's meaning. I would even recommend this to fans of the medium who may be interested in a sci-fi/fantasy, though picking up the first book is essential and getting your hands on the Amory Wars Sketchbook for more background information does not hurt, either.
I'm looking forward to future graphic novels in the series. There are three albums/chapters left to be done (Second Stage Turbine Blade is the second chapter in the 'Amory Wars' story, actually, though it was the band's first major album), not including the upcoming prequel, which I understand will presented as both the album and a traditional novel.Amory Wars Volume 2: The Second Stage Turbine Blade OverviewCollected at last, the second volume in the ongoing saga of The Amory Wars from Coheed and Cambria's Claudio Sanchez, concluding the story of The Second Stage Turbine Blade. Collects The Amory Wars 2 #1-6, plus the exclusive story "33."
