Fleet Blade ReviewI am a fan of BKery's contemporaries and I was interested in seeing how her writing style would transfer over to the historical genre as BKery seems so intimately acquainted with Chicago that I thought it may be a hard trip to release her characters into poofy-gowned England.
Unfortunately Fleet Blade was a mediocre read with an okay story line and bland characters. The basic gist of the story is the heroine is a pampered English lady who is bored with her privileged life and gets occasional kicks through traveling in the underground fleet tunnels. The hero is your bad guy with a secret soft heart who uses the fleet tunnels to smuggle goods. Hero and heroine meet one day, some forgettable character interaction occurs, and they live happily ever after.
I think the main weakness of the story was that the characters felt like they were 21st century people trapped in skin tight breeches and corsets. The heroine easily escaped chaperons and responsibilities to flit in-and-out of the fleet tunnels to tryst with the hero. The hero seemed more like a frat boy trying to run a gang of little rascals rather than a hardened underground criminal. In a nutshell, it seem like BKery had a great story in her head, but when it came down to actually writing it, she hit road blocks as she realized that she'd have to write in historical English vs modern vernacular.
Overall a book that isn't worth reading, although it does not reflect on the skills of the author in her contemporary books.Fleet Blade OverviewLady Lora Alexander thrives on adventure and gets it by regularly sneaking around London via the subterranean tunnels of the buried Fleet River.
