Hayate X Blade Vol 2 (v. 2) ReviewHayate Cross Blade 2 is the second in the new manga series written and drawn by Shizuru Hayashiya. Revolving around the tale of Hayate and her exploits at the Tenichi Academy, readers are entertained all throughout the manga with various fights and hilarious character interaction.
In this second offering, Hayate and her partner Ayana, are now officially an unstoppable team in the Hoshitori. For newcomers, the Hoshitori is a lucrative extracurricular activity at the school in which the students partner up and enlist in an elaborate battle royale tournament of sword fighting with the prize of prestige and money. Basically the students get swords and fight in pairs to knock the opponents stars off, collect the stars and move up in rank. It is quite an entertaining extracurricular activity. The first volume covered the introduction of Hayata with the school and her sister in arms, and the task to pay off the loan at the orphanage. This one instead further explores the wishes of Ayana as well as the limits of Hayate and if she will let friendship stand in the way or her bond with her sister in arms.
This volume succeeds in being even more hilarious than the first. Solely for the fact that Ayana's roommate is always there to say the most hilarious thing is a win for this book. Hayate is usually always clinging to Ayana, saying things that could be taken in the wrong way to imply some weird things like they are going out with each other, or just acting like a moron (or as the volume has indicated in the title of each chapter, an idiot). For a portion of this volume, Hayate ends up leaving Ayana's side and so Ayana feels relieved at first but then appears to get jealous that Hayate is with someone else .Needless to say, Hayate ends up saying that and gets whacked bigtime by Ayana. Ayana's roommate also tries to indicate this by either saying that "she will sleep in Ayana's bed to keep her company since Hayate isnt there anymore," however, Ayana gets really mad and brings out her club with nails in it as if to beat down her roommate (this is a running theme in the series). Its moments like these that make it a laughable tale. Also another funny interaction lies in the interactions with the head of the academy and the Hoshitori, Kaicho and her sister in arms Shizuku. Their interaction is funny because Kaicho is supposed to know all the rules and be smart, however, at times her wicked sense of humor or bluntness gets in the way and makes it extremely funny. There are many more interactions like these in the book that are quite hilarious, such as the one between Hayate and her roommate Kibi Momoka, as well as Momoka and her stalker.
In closing, I believe that this is one of the funniest series that I have read thus far. With great artwork, a hilarious yet serious story and a (special preview of Strawberry Panic, another manga) growing cast of characters there is really not anything to hate.Hayate X Blade Vol 2 (v. 2) OverviewA FRIEND IN NEED...When Hayate first arrived at Tenchi Academy, it was just as a temporary fill-in for her injured twin sister Nagi. Now a student in her own right, Hayate and her new sister-in-arms Ayana, are ready to show their dueling prowess and take the Hoshitori by storm! However, things aren't going quite so well for Hayate's roommate Momoka, who may be thrown out of Tenchi Academy if she doesn't defeat her best-friend Riona's abusive partner Ouka in an officially-sanctioned duel.Meanwhile, Hayate and Ayana have troubles of their own as they race to save the orphanage where Hayate grew up from a mountain of debt before the yakuza come to collect. Not only that, but as Sports Day approaches, Hayate must learn a vital lesson—that when push comes to shove, even a new friend could turn out to be your worst enemy...
