The Black Blade: A Gull Village Story ReviewI really enjoyed this excerpt because it drew me into a completely new world. I find this a really original idea for YA fantasy. I love the idea of rival tribes of gull and crow riders, and it's so interesting discovering what life is like for these furry creatures. The description of the salmon hunt is fantastic! I could really picture it, and I like how all the elements are portrayed: gull riders above the school of fish, harpoons, etc. Blueberries must be really large for these characters, right? Despite the suspenseful hunt, this excerpt felt a little bit slow, but not so much that I wouldn't read on. The dialogue occasionally feels contrived to transmit information to the reader, especially Fenn's little speech beginning with "I needed those fish". A lot of the world-building is working really well (the hunt, for example), so it'd be nice if the information Fenn reveals here could be introduced more subtly and naturally. Overall, I'm just really impressed by the originality of this book!The Black Blade: A Gull Village Story Overview
