Henny and His Extraordinary Rollerblades ReviewI bought this as a gift for a couple of nephews, and I was more than a little pleasantly surprised. I picked it up intending to just scan through it and ended up the reading the whole thing - needless to say they got it a couple of days later than planned!
So much impressed me, from the well realised characters, the brilliantly constructed narrative which pulls you along from page to page and the palpable sense of enjoyment that comes from reading a writer who blatantly loves what they do. Further to this, I was highly impressed by how the book doesn't talk down to it's young readers. While not being hard to follow by any means, it's well written enough to challenge any child - and rewarding this challenge with a great story and payoff. What better way is there to enchant someone at a young age with the joys a good book can bring?
The tale has many moral messages, but these are portrayed subtly, with a firm grasp of realism interspersed within the fantastical narrative. Messages of this sort are always best digested in this way, as opposed to making a child feel a book is telling them what to do or how to behave, which this fab little tale avoids beautifully.
I can't recommend this enough - I'm an English Literature graduate and I enjoyed it, as did the aforementioned nephews - it's very rare for a book to work on that number of levels! If you haven't chucked this in your basket by now, you're missing out...Henny and His Extraordinary Rollerblades OverviewHenny is ten years old.
