Mating Rituals ReviewWarning: Mild Spoilers.
Mating Rituals is a boy-love story set far into the future of deep space. There you are introduced to a stellar cast of characters that includes the brilliant Tig, the bewitching Raphael, and the rough Leon. The rest of the crew is just as awesome, even with their brief appearance in the story and Beth is a particular favorite of mine. A quick, easy and humorous read, it still retains deeper emotion as the characters struggle to deal with a problem that could lead to death among the crew. Love and jealousy come into play as Tig finds himself in the dilemma of sharing his partner or potentially dooming both Raphael and Leon to death.
The story itself is well-written and paints an easily envisioned time and place. Each character is distinct in personality, rounding out the crew reasonably though the mysterious second botanist doesn't make an appearance in this particular story. There are two major sex scenes with explicit language used, one of which contains sex between three people, two of which aren't human. While tentacles might not be to everyone's taste, the application in this particular story is well-thought out and not just a cheap porn trick. Both scenes, specially the tentacle scene are handled very well, a good balance between explicit action and emotional narration. There's also a surprise at the end; let's just say that the term mating rituals is about as accurate a title as could be given.
With hints at a fascinating history, captivating characters, and the potential for exponential growth I can only hope that Nix decides to perhaps share some more of this intriguing world she gave us a glimpse of.Mating Rituals OverviewTig has Followed the Long Path. He's been alive longer than humans have been exploring out past our solar system of origin. When he hired Raphael to work as a botanist on the Morehouse, he had no idea what that sudden impulse of attraction was going to get him into. Some species really shouldn't mix. Sirens are restricted, for their good and humanity's good, the two should not make long haul trips between the stars. It is possible to make the best mistakes without realizing what you're doing...
