Prison Killing Techniques: Blade, Bludgeon, and Bomb ReviewThis is a good book to read if you think you might someday wind up behind bars, as it gives excellent advice regarding the Machavellian world of prison society. I've read about a dozen books which purported to offer "survival tips" to potential inmates, and this one really delivers the goods. HOWEVER, since the title of this book is "Prison Killing Techniques," one would assume that said techniques would be the book's primary focus . . . this was not the case. FURTHERMORE, much of the author's data seems to be the result of either listening to ignorant rumors or engaging in idle speculation.
Since I am a lifelong practitioner of the bladed arts, I decided to check out what Mr Omar had to say about knives. I was shocked and appalled. First, very little was actually said about knives, as he seemed more concerned about things like razor blades (6 different methods of constructing razored weapons), nails (interesting push dagger design using a rolled up TV Guide), broken glass (wrap with cloth to grip) and pencils. He perpetuates the Liddy myth that a pencil can be driven up under the jaw and "penetrate to the lower brain, killing an attacker instantly," and makes similar statements regarding the ear, nose, and eye. If you've ever taken an anatomy course and examined a human skull, you'll quickly realize why this is untrue. He then advises us to defend against an overhead stab through the use of the "X-block" . . . a purely theoretical move found in several WW2 Combatives manuals which has been thoroughly discredited decades ago.
Mr Omar seems to feel that the "Ultimate Weapon" is a rolled up magazine. He truly believes that if you roll it up, bind it with tape or rubber bands, and smear it with Elmer's Glue it will become "as strong as steel" and can be used to create nunchaku or gun barrels. This is untrue. Certainly, a rolled magazine (but a newspaper would be more likely) treated with glue can be transformed into a nasty "paper mache" spear, but it will not provide significant strength or weight.
Mr Omar also believes that he is knowledgable regarding poisons and explosives. His ignorance in these matters is remarkable, considering that he has chosen to discuss both subjects at length. His data on toxins seems to have been gleaned from a Poison Control Center pamphlet, and his knowledge about IEDs was apparently gained from believing the words of lying inmates posing as "experts."
The reason I did not give this book only 1 star was because he actually gives some very good advice about how to avoid various traps, con-games, and set-ups in prison; as well as some rather devious tricks for getting a troublesome bully either sent to solitary or transferred to another facility (without snitching). Additionally, he provides some good (though certainly not all good) data pertaining to improvised weapons.
Omar talks tough -- and I believe that he has, in fact, served time in a correctional facility -- but he is certainly no expert on how to kill. And he keeps referring to prison as "Steel Nation" -- 2 or 3 times wouldn't have bothered me, but he repeats this phrase about 50 times in a 120 page book and it became tiresome.
A good "gag gift" for a Corrections Officer or someone on their way to the slammer, but a waste of time for the serious martial artist.Prison Killing Techniques: Blade, Bludgeon, and Bomb Overview
