Theory of Adaptive Fiber Composites: From Piezoelectric Material Behavior to Dynamics of Rotating Structures (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications) ReviewThis is only book that comprehensively covers Rotating beams (Helicopter rotor blade, wind turbines, compressors, gas turbine etc) with a view towards integrating smart materials in a unified setting. In just over two hundred pages detailed derivations of flexible rotating composite beams with smart actuation are included. That is the strong point of this book, the derivation of actual mathematical models from first principles. From electric field equations, to Piezoelectric to continuum mechanics applied to rotating structures (beams and shells) are derived from basic principles. Use of classical tools including virtual work, extended Hamiltonian principles etc are used throughout making wonderful learning tool. There are frankly too many beam theories, both linear and nonlinear. Few are based on clearly stated assumptions and principles (as D. Hodge has written a paper on it).
Since everything is derived from fundamental laws in this book, reader can clearly see all the assumptions and principles involved. Another remarkable part is the use of color pictures which seems to be from a CAD models which really aid understanding. The theory is as general as possible. Overall, this is perhaps the only and the best book on theory of rotating beams with integrative smart materials for dynamic-adaptive control.Theory of Adaptive Fiber Composites: From Piezoelectric Material Behavior to Dynamics of Rotating Structures (Solid Mechanics and Its Applications) OverviewAdaptive structural systems in conjunction with multifunctional materials facilitate technical solutions with a wide spectrum of applications and a high degree of integration. By virtue of combining the actuation and sensing capabilities of piezoelectric materials with the advantages of fiber composites, the anisotropic constitutive properties may be tailored according to requirements and the failure behavior can be improved. Such adaptive fiber composites are very well-suited for the task of noise and vibration reduction. In this respect the helicopter rotor system represents a very interesting and widely perceptible field of application. The occurring oscillations can be reduced with aid of aerodynamic couplings via fast manipulation of the angle of attack, being induced by twist actuation of the rotor blade. On the one hand the sensing properties may be used to determine the current state of deformation, while on the other hand the actuation properties may be used to attain the required state of deformation. The implementation of such concepts requires comprehensive knowledge of the theoretical context, which shall be illuminated in the work at hand from the examination of the material behavior to the simulation of the rotating structure.
