Blade of the Minstrel Shion Review"Shion" is a Japanese manga that features an angsty sword-wielding minstrel (can't you tell from the title?) battling monsters in a fantasy world. Although the book is categorized under Children's Books, this is more appropriate to teens and above.
"The Minstrel", the first story in this volume, introduces our hero as he searches for an evil beast, his arch-enemy. The story is quite short but has an interesting twist at the end that reveals a bit about Shion's background. "Mirrors" finds Shion battling the incestuous twin sorcerers, Toy and Doll, and shows how one's greatest strength can also be the greatest weakness.
In tone, style, and storyline, "Shion" reminds me very much of the "Vampire Hunter D" anime. The art is lush, rather detailed but strong, like etchings for classic dark fairy tales or those found in my copy of Dante's "Inferno". I'm sure this was a deliberate decision by the artist and is actually a good analogy for the story. The plot, while squarely in the standard fantasy environment, is good but strangely not engrossing, but again, neither was that for "D" or "Inferno". If you liked "Vampire Hunter D", you'll like "Shion", and if not, this is probably not for you.Blade of the Minstrel Shion Overview
